Boulder Beer Killer Penguin Review
Name: Boulder Beer Killer Penguin
Style: Barleywine
ABV: 10%
IBUs: 60
The last time I reviewed anything from Boulder Beer, this blog....no...that can't be right! According to what I see, this blog was only 3 days old when I last reviewed anything from Boulder Beer and that was almost two years ago; Where does the time go?
In any case, I have their Killer Penguin Barleywine. To my knowledge, this is a winter seasonal and the name comes from the high ABV and having twice the maltiness as other "winter beers." I guess Killer Emu was already taken (I cannot confirm or deny this...)
Appearance - Clear Crimson color with some very light visible carbonation. The head takes on a light khaki color and is fairly foamy in appearance.
Aroma - Strong caramel maltiness backed up by some potent grapefruit and piney hops, along with light roasted barley, rye and toffee sweetness.
Taste - Moderate caramel maltiness and moderately potent grapefruit hoppiness upfront, followed by some citra hops and a light caramel maltiness on the end with a slight bitterness.
Killer Penguin is a good barleywine, but the flavor as a whole comes off a bit underwhelming when compared to other beers of the same style; Even with "Twice the malts." Sure, it's not bad but I don't see myself going out of my way to try it again.

Avery Hog Heaven Review
Name: Avery Hog Heaven
Style: Barleywine
ABV: 9.2%
Avery Brewing's Hog Heaven holds a very very special place in my heart as the first barleywine-style ale that I ever had. It seems like only yesterday I walked into The Four Firkins with a gift card in hand from my birthday. As I finished putting my mix-a-six together, I still had another $10 to spend. Since I was in the best place to find craft beer, I asked one of the guys working there about a barleywine that would be good for a green horn who was new the style. He pointed me in the direction of Avery's Hog Heaven and I was sold.
Following his advice of allowing it age, I sat on it for about 3 months before deciding to crack it open. Upon drinking it, was struck by how different it was from any other styles I had tried before. At the same time, I was taken aback by how great it tasted and it has since become one of my favorite styles of beer.
A couple months ago when I was reviewing Avery Salvation, I pointed out that while I was glad to be able to get Avery again, I expressed my desire to get my hands on Hog Heaven once more. Well this past weekend, I was visiting my local store when I noticed that they finally added Hog Heaven to their Avery lineup. Needless to say, I picked this up and reveled in the fact I was finally able to revisit an old favorite. So now that I have a more defined palate, it's time to see how this has stood up after all these years.
Hog Heaven pours a dark orange color with with a orange colored foamy head. The lacing left behind is mild but stick and the visible carbonation is also fairly mild.
The nose possess a very strong citrus hop and caramel malt backbone with a noticeable dry hop aroma and distinct toffee sweetness. Even 2 1/2 years later, the aroma still manages to pack the same punch that I remember.
The flavor possesses a pretty strong caramel maltiness and an equally strong citrus hop profile. There is also some toffee sweetness and a dry hop bitterness that shine through particularly in the aftertaste.
The palate has a very thick & heavy body but the carbonation is thankfully more on the mild side so you get to enjoy the flavors this beer has to offer.
Despite having had many barleywines since first having this beer, Hog Heaven still tastes just as great as I remember it. It's not as complex in terms of taste compared to other beers in the same style, but it is very robust and quite delicious! For those looking dabble in the barleywine style, Hog Heaven is a great way to get yourself started.

Boulder Beer Never Summer Ale Review
Name: Boulder Beer Never Summer Ale
Style: Winter Warmer
ABV: 6.5%
I was going to continue my Sam Adams Spring Sampler reviews tonight, until I stumbled across a beer in my fridge from one of the mix-a-six packs I got over this winter. I'll admit I almost forgot about the Bell's Third Coast Old Ale sitting in my fridge earlier this winter until I saw it starting at me on the shelf, like it was telling me "Did you forget about me, Nick? How could you?!!"
Forgetfulness aside, it'll be nice to finally get this out of the way. The last thing I really want is a beer to goto waste. For this review, I have Boulder Beer's Never Summer Ale which is their Winter Wamer style ale.
The beer is dark brown and has a fairly light density head. The lacing it leaves behind is very bountiful and sticky.
The nose has your typical Caramel, Yeasts and Malty notes you'd expect from a Winter Warmer style beer; However this one has a rather strong floral hop profile, interesting for a Winter Warmer style but not unheard of.
Like the smell, it has a caramel sweetness along with some piney hops and malts. I really am not digging the resin-like aftertaste I am getting from the flavor though. It isn't enough to ruin the flavor but it definitely hurts it.
The only thing this beer does perfectly is it's body: It's VERY creamy and smooth, almost like I'm having this on-draught or on-tap. This is an incredibly smooth and easy beer to drink when it comes to the body.
If only the flavor were as good as the body. If the flavor weren't so off balance and on par with the body, this would be an incredible beer! Oh well, at least we have summer to look forward to!
Boulder Beer Never Summer Ale - 6/10
